The Hangout Lower Third refers to the branding at the bottom of a Hangout Interface that shows your name and an optional tagline.
The main benefit of the Lower Third is branding. The other benefit is being able to identify the person by name.
Setting up the Lower Third
To setup the Lower Third within the Hangout Interface you’ll need to firstly install the Hangout Toolbox.
To install the Hangout Toolbox go to the Hangout Main Menu and move your mouse over to the left hand side of the screen.
Go to the apps icon “Discover more apps for your video call”.
By clicking on the apps icon you will find the Hangout Toolbox.
Click on the Hangout Toolbox to install (you made need to give permission), and it will be installed on the Hangout Main Menu.
Clicking on the Hangout Toolbox will open it on the right hand side of the Hangout Interface.
Click on the Head icon at the far left, which opens up the fields to create the Lower Third.
Default Lower Thirds
The fields that need to be completed are:
- Enter your name in the field that says “Enter Display Name”
- Enter Tagline
- Turn Lower Third “On”
As you can see below, I’ve created my Lower Third using my name and a tagline I’m known for.
When you turn the Lower Third to “On”, it will appear backwards to you and this is how you’ll always see your Lower Third inside the Hangout Interface. However, people viewing will always see it as normal.
To see what it looks like from a Viewers perspective, you can flip it around by clicking on “Mirror local video” which is next to the Lower Third On/Off switch to the right.
When your lower third loads it will by default have your profile image. This can be changed to a Logo by clicking on “Choose Logo”, with square images being the ideal.
You can also change the color of the highlight line by clicking the ”Color” button and selecting a color.
Save Lower Third Settings
To save the Lower Third settings for use next time, enter the Name you want in the “Saved Presets” box and click the blue “Save” button.
Then turn on saved “Presets” via the blue checkmark. You can also remove Presets by clicking on the trash can beside them.
Customized Lower Third
You can customize your Lower Third by having a Custom Overlay graphic. This is a transparent 1280 x 720px graphic in a PNG or JPG format.
Click on the “Custom Upload” button to select the transparent graphic and upload it. Then turn the Custom Overlay button to “On”.
In the Saved Presets box, name your Custom Overlay and Save it. To turn on the Custom Overlay, click on the blue checkmark.
Hangout Toolbox Settings
Click on Settings brings up the following:
- Enable Auto Load
- Mute notification sounds
- Auto load last used lower
Enable Auto Load ensures that the Hangout Toolbox auto loads when you enter the Hangout Interface. Also, auto loading the last Lower Third used is a good idea if that’s the one you’ll mainly be using.
After you’ve entered the Hangout Interface, make sure you close down the Hangout Toolbox by clicking the icon in the Hangout Main Menu on the left. This needs to be done so other apps, such as the Comment Tracker, can function properly.
